Showing Over Telling
In creative writing, educators emphasize the importance of “showing” the reader rather than outright “telling” them. You could describe, in endless paragraphs, the pain a character feels after something has happened. Or, you could narratively describe how their actions change in the wake of something good or bad. The secondary approach has more impact.
Life is similar. When it comes to showing your girlfriend or boyfriend you love them, just telling them the words “I love you” probably won’t be enough. This is a good thing to do, and the two of you should tell each other that often. However, you also want to actually do things that show you mean what you say; the following are five to consider.
Do That Chore They Hate Without Being Asked
Often, there are little things around the house your spouse probably hates doing, but has to. The dishes, vacuuming, laundry; some people can’t stand certain things, even though they hardly bug you. Well, do those chores. Your significant other will notice; even if it takes a few times. When they do, they’ll be quite pleased with you.
- Help Them Avoid Social Situations They Find Uncomfortable
Your wife or girlfriend has social contacts she has no desire whatever to maintain, but she must for one reason or another. Maybe she’s a teacher and has teacher friends that really wear her out. Maybe she has family that grates on her.
Well, help her avoid that problem. Maybe your man has some work buddies that drive him crazy. Give him the excuse to avoid them.
- Expand Your Romantic Repertoire With These Suggestions
Sometimes the issue isn’t that you’re apathetic, the issue is that you’re having trouble thinking up something that your girlfriend or boyfriend would really resonate with. Well, outsource your imagination through gestures to show love such as those in the link. - Throw Them a Surprise Party
A surprise party, or surprise tickets to an event if your significant other can spare the time, represent fine ways of showing you care. Now, do keep in mind that some people don’t appreciate things like surprise parties, so if that’s your spouse, don’t get yourself in trouble. For many, though, this is a perfect gift. - Spend Time With Them
One of the best ways to show you care is just to spend time with the people you love. Be with them. Talk with them. Laugh with them. Cry with them. Lovers especially appreciate it when you spend time with them.
Communicating Your Deep Love
People understand you care when you spend a lot of time with them. Surprise parties, or tickets to events, also do a great job of showing how much you value another person. Also, do different things to show you care over time. Help them avoid situations they find uncomfortable, and do those unwelcome chores unasked every now and again.
These aren’t the only ways you can show you love your significant other. Mix and match. Hopefully, even if these tactics don’t quite appeal to your situation, these suggestions help you find ways of communicating how much you care.
